At once a merciless skewering of all things fanboy and an extremely satisfying addition to the Futurama franchise, Bender's Game is among the best of the animated series' feature length adventures. The game in question is Dungeons and Dragons, and Bender wants in--only robots aren't programmed with the necessary imagination. Naturally, Bender's plans to develop one go completely awry and land him in an android asylum. The role-playing plotline later re-emerges--in typically convoluted Futurama fashion--via a subplot involving Professor Farnsworth's conversion of dark matter into spaceship fuel, which created a key to a very D&D-influenced universe where our hapless heroes eventually find themselves. The alternate world storyline allows for much lampooning of fantasy tropes, with Lord of the Rings receiving the lion's share of the tweaks. Seeing as how the writers have already devoted much of the movie's running time to parodying Star Wars and Star Trek (and their Lego offshoots), one might think that Bender's Game might suffer from pop-culture overload, but surprisingly, it all feels fresh and frequently funny, and the writers are wise to ground the story in their eccentric characters rather than pinballing them through an endless string of gags. The result is probably the strongest of the direct-to-DVD Futurama releases to date, and one that newcomers to the show's cracked universe can appreciate as much as longtime fans.As with previous Futurama DVD releases, the extras come fast and furious on Bender's Game: commentary by members of the cast and production team (including Matt Groening) is both informative and funny, while interviews with the writers and producers discuss, among other topics, the influence of Dungeons and Dragons on the series and the 3D models used in the feature. Aspiring animators might appreciate "How To Draw Futurama in 83 Easy Steps and the storyboard animatic for the first part of the story, while the "Genetics Lab" feature allows for some amusing Dr. Moreau-style cross-breeding of the characters. Recording session bloopers and a deleted scene offer their own laughs, but the most enjoyable extra must be the preview for the next Futurama feature, Into the Wild Green Yonder, which suggests a shocking development for one of the show's regulars. -- Paul Gaita

3 out of 5 stars better than i expected (3.5/5)   July 30, 2010
falcon (canada)
i won't say i'm a huge fan of Futurama.i have seen a few episodes of the TV series and was not all that impressed. i found them to be mostly slow and boring and unfunny.but, since my friend had bought this direct to video Futurama movie,i thought why not.what's that the worst that could happen?well,as it turns out,i liked it.i thought the story was very interesting, and flowed very well and there were some very funny moments and funny characters.the best part was that i was able to follow everything without knowing that much about the series.after watching this movie(number 3 in the series)i might check out the other three Futurama movies.they are:#1 Bender's Big Score:#2 The Beast With A Billion Backs:#4 Into the Wild Green Yonder.for me,Bender's Game is a 3.5/5

4 out of 5 stars Good, not best of Futurama   April 16, 2010

The story is fine, but not as great as the episodes from the first 4 volumes. It's still very interesting despite everything. Graphics and overall production quality are stellar, especially at full HD (1080p and a decent surround sound system). That's why I highly recommend you buy the Blu-ray version if at all possible.

5 out of 5 stars favorite of the 4   April 1, 2010

Just my opnion - I thought this movie had the most interesting storyline and gave all of the characters a chance to shine. Great dialogue and really nice animation. Of course, no shortage of nerdery, which is always good fun.

2 out of 5 stars Bender's Game or Bender's Groan?   September 10, 2009
Brian Lueth (Chicago, IL United States)
I gotta say, I'm a big fan of Futurama and I really enjoyed their previous two films, sorta, but what the heck went wrong? I remember a time when Futurama was witty, clever and laugh-out-loud funny, Bender's Game wasn't all that witty, clever or laugh-out-loud funny. Fact is I really didn't enjoy myself at all while watching this and, trust me, that's rather hard to admit being such a follower of the TV series and films.

Okay, I get it, the entire thing was a tribute to Gary Gygax and his D&D legacy as well as a LOTR parody, I'm good with all that but I just wasn't entertained by any of it. The winks, nods and yuks, none of them seemed to really be effective this film installment around, it all felt so "by-the-numbers" and uninspired. Perhaps this will work better once it's split into episodes and aired on cable but I won't be tuning in to this again. Let's hope the fourth film installment offers us the type of Futurama that spawned the loyal cult following it has today.

5 out of 5 stars The Oddest One   May 27, 2009

Futurama Bender's Game Is by far the strangest one of the four Futurama Movies From the beginning intro it tells you its gunna be a trip but still has the smart humor I enjoy watching futurama for.
