Didn't make me think July 23, 2010 Austin R. Allen (tennessee) I'm a big R.A. fan, I have read every single book in the drizzt saga and picked this one up excited. Through the first 2 books I was fairly happy. Then it seemed like Salvatore kind of got tired of writing and decided to montage the rest of the series. In a 40 page span cadderly goes from weak yo-yo throwing Page to awesome Demi-God warrior. There was no gradual depth to the book or plot themes that made me stop and think. At the end of every dark elf book I would have to sit and just think for sometimes up to an hour about all the questions it raised in me. These books, I just closed and went "meh". If this is your first dip into Salvatore's books don't judge the dark elf saga on what he has created here. Comparing it to the drizzt saga is like comparing a youth league baseball team to the new york yankees. Same general concept. Alot less bang for your buck. All in all the only thing I can really say is I wish I had borrowed these from my local library instead of buying them. I've read every Drizzt book at least 4 times, but I'll most likely never pick these up again.
Fun but slow. April 21, 2010 Miss Kitty (Florida) This is a good adventure tale but it's just not as much fun or as fast paced as any of the Drizzt stories. The pace is very slow and the actions of the main characters can often be confusing. The Dwarves are meant to be funny but they come across as odd since all they do is fight with each other (they're brothers) and it seems that one of them can only say "oo oi" and "doo dad" for some strange reason. The hero is a character you care about but he seems to have the attention span of a gnat and no common sense at all and as a result he keeps getting into bad situations that just seem to get worse.
Salvatore writes that he created this character after the first 6 Drizzt books were finished and thought he was done with the Drow and wanted to move on to new things. I think it would have been much better to find a way to link Drizzt with Cadderly and create a new storyline. The Cleric Quintet would have been great if the story had more direction and really held the reader's attention better.
Epic fantasy tale - and thoroughly engaging March 27, 2010 Jason Stokes (St. Louis) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've read some of the Drizzt books, and really enjoyed them, so when I saw 5 Salvatore books for under $15, I was pretty excited. I read through this >1000 page series of 5 books (probably 1500 pages in regular paperback size), over the past few weeks. I was thoroughly engaged, and found myself staying up late and waking up early to get a little more reading time in between work and real life.
From the comedic characters - Ivan and Pikel, to the deadly serious - Danica and Shayleigh, and, of course, the hero, Cadderly, I was interested in their stories and way of looking at things. I really liked the introduction to the book by R.A. Salvatore as well - I reread it after the book and understand where he's coming from.
In all, I completely recommend these books as some of the best fantasy out there. For the price, especially, you won't find a better deal.
Perfect! March 20, 2010 E. FitzGerald I heard my younger sibling, a fan of the Dark Elf series, was looking for this Collector's Edition. SO...I found it, bought it, and let them know it was on the way. When it arrived at their house, they promptly sat down to read it for the rest of the day!
A wonderful story I was sad to see end November 28, 2009 enjoybooks (nbridge,ny) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I met Drizzt by chance when I was shopping for a new fantasy read at a bookstore. The clerk recommended it.I read all of those and fell in love with all of the characters.Drizzt does cross paths with Cadderly and that is how we met.I was finishing up the drizzt novels until the Transitions came out and came across this one.
I had to read it because I loved all the other characters the writer had created.I really had a hard time with the first one,Canticle.I like to be out and traveling in my stories but it sets the base for the main character Cadderly. After that it really takes off and I found myself really enjoying it.I can not count the times I have done full belly laughs at some of the antics in these stories.Just the authors description of facial expressions or reactions had me roaring with laughter. Not to mention the Boulder Shoulders crazy fun.
Who could not fall in love with the surly Ivan or the sweet Pikel?I am so glad he does become a doo-dad(druid).It made more sense of the Drizzt novels after. It was a wonderful read and you will not be disappointed.Gosh just get it!
I am scared to read the Transition novel next.Pikel looses his arm and the world seems to be collapsing.Orc kingdoms?very scary.I guess I will find out more because I start The orc king tomorrow.
